Storage shelves look simple until the price, wall space and intended load are compared. We checked three exact IKEA Malaysia configurations on 6 October 2026: BROR 496.194.15 at RM650, IVAR 995.824.81 at RM325, and BILLY 895.452.91 at a promotional RM281 shown against RM319. All three official offers were marked in stock for Malaysia when checked, but branch stock and delivery to a Sarawak postcode still depend on checkout.
BROR is our best overall choice for utility rooms because it combines powder-coated galvanized steel, open shelves and two drawers in one 85 cm-wide unit. IVAR is the value pick for buyers who want adjustable solid-pine shelving they can oil or wax. BILLY uses the least floor depth and reaches 237 cm with its height extension, making it the best situational choice for books and light household storage where the wall is tall enough. These are different storage jobs, not three interchangeable colours.

1. BROR: strongest utility-room package

IKEA BROR shelving unit with drawers, article 496.194.15, is a black 85×40×190 cm configuration with open shelves and two drawers. IKEA describes its powder-coated galvanized-steel structure as rust protected and easy to clean, while the shelf can take twice the load of a standard shelf at 3 kg/dm². The two drawers separate hand tools, cables or cleaning accessories from larger bins on the open shelves. That mixed layout is the main reason to pay RM650.
The 40 cm depth gives BROR more front-to-back room than IVAR or BILLY, but it also protrudes farther into a storeroom. Steel surfaces suit equipment and utility storage better than display-focused books, and the dark industrial appearance may dominate a bedroom. Buyers should confirm wall anchoring, assembly parts and the load limit for each component rather than treating the 3 kg/dm² statement as one total-unit figure.
Pros
- Only model here with two integrated drawers as well as open shelves.
- Galvanized, powder-coated steel is a practical choice for wipe-clean utility storage.
- Published shelf-load statement gives a more useful planning reference for heavier items.
Cons
- RM650 is RM325 above IVAR and RM369 above BILLY’s checked promotional price.
- Forty-centimetre depth consumes more aisle space.
- Industrial black frame is less discreet in a living room.
Buy or avoid: Choose BROR for tools, appliances, supplies and mixed open/closed organisation. Avoid it when your priority is a shallow book wall, warm natural timber or the lowest possible spend.
2. IVAR: adaptable solid pine at the middle price

IKEA IVAR pine shelving unit, article 995.824.81, measures 89×30×179 cm and costs RM325. Its untreated solid pine is the category-defining feature: IKEA says the surface becomes more hardwearing and easier to maintain after oiling or waxing. Shelf positions can be moved along the perforated uprights, so tall cereal boxes, storage tubs or craft machines do not force every tier to keep the same clearance.
IVAR’s 30 cm depth is ten centimetres shallower than BROR while still being the widest model here. Untreated pine also demands a decision: leave it natural, or budget time and materials for a protective finish, especially in humid rooms. It has no drawers, so small loose objects need separate boxes. Its RM44 premium over promotional BILLY buys solid pine, a shorter 179 cm profile and more obvious reconfiguration rather than extra vertical capacity.
Pros
- Solid pine can be finished to suit the room and repaired more naturally than a foil surface.
- Movable shelves accommodate changing box and appliance heights.
- RM325 stays far below BROR while offering a more furniture-like material.
Cons
- Untreated wood needs suitable care if exposed to humidity, stains or frequent wiping.
- No enclosed drawer for small accessories.
- At 89 cm it is the widest unit and still requires safe wall fixing.
Buy or avoid: IVAR suits a pantry, hobby room or flexible family store where shelf spacing may change. Skip it if you want a finished white surface immediately, lockable storage or a narrow 80 cm bay.
3. BILLY: maximum vertical book storage for the least depth

IKEA BILLY 895.452.91 is the 80×28×237 cm white bookcase combination with a height extension. The official page highlights adjustable shelves and using more of the wall area. Its checked offer was RM281, valid until 14 October 2026, with RM319 shown as the high/reference price. Because that is a dated promotion, compare the live cart price rather than assuming RM281 will continue.
BILLY is only 28 cm deep and 80 cm wide, so it is the easiest of these three to place along a living-room or study wall. The 237 cm height is also its constraint: measure ceiling height, cornices, switches and the space required to assemble and anchor the extension. It is intended for bookcase-style storage, not as a substitute for BROR when dense hardware or workshop equipment is involved. Board construction also does not offer IVAR’s sand-and-refinish appeal.
Pros
- Lowest checked price and shallowest footprint.
- Height extension uses vertical space that the 179 cm IVAR leaves unused.
- Adjustable shelves work well for books and display pieces of varying heights.
Cons
- RM281 was a time-limited promotional offer, not a permanent guaranteed price.
- 237 cm height may conflict with low ceilings and makes correct anchoring critical.
- Not the appropriate choice for the heavier utility-storage job BROR targets.
Buy or avoid: Pick BILLY for books and light household objects when floor depth is tight and the ceiling is high enough. Avoid it for damp utility zones, very heavy equipment or rooms where the extension cannot be assembled and secured safely.
What the price gaps actually buy
BILLY is cheapest because it is a shallow bookcase system and the checked RM281 was promotional. Paying RM44 more for IVAR changes the material to untreated solid pine and lowers the unit to 179 cm while keeping movable shelves. BROR then doubles IVAR’s price: the extra RM325 pays for galvanized-steel construction, 40 cm depth, a published heavier-shelf statement and two drawers. The best value therefore depends on whether you store books, changing household boxes, or heavy utility gear.
Malaysia buying checklist and final verdict
Confirm the exact article number, current price, branch stock, postcode delivery fee, flat-pack dimensions, assembly service, return terms and wall-fixing requirements before payment. IKEA’s national in-stock label does not guarantee immediate Kuching delivery. BROR is our overall utility pick, IVAR is the best flexible-value option, and BILLY wins for shallow vertical book storage. Prices and availability were checked on IKEA Malaysia on 6 October 2026 and may change.
