Quick verdict: useful if you enjoy the coffee-making part

The De’Longhi Dedica Duo EC890.GR suits a small Malaysian kitchen where hot espresso, milk drinks and occasional cold brew all matter. Its slim body is appealing, but the stronger reason to choose it is having cold extraction and a manually controlled steam wand in one machine. Budget around the RM1,599 official reference price, plus coffee and any separate grinder.

Specifications come from the Malaysian product page [2] and the EC890 family manual [3]. The local gallery shows a portafilter, two filter baskets, tamper, scoop, milk jug and cleaning tool. Confirm the carton contents with the seller: the manual says accessories vary, including the jug and ESE-pod filter.
Cold brew: understand the five-minute promise
De’Longhi describes its Cold Extraction Technology [4] as pulsing ambient-temperature water through coffee at low pressure, bypassing the heater. The Duo manual puts its cycle at about five minutes and tells you to add ice. It makes a freshly extracted drink that you chill in the glass; there is no built-in refrigeration.
That is useful when you fancy a cold coffee without preparing an overnight batch. We would not assume the flavour matches long-steeped cold brew, or judge sweetness and acidity without tasting it. You still load and tamp the coffee before pressing the preset.
Reasons to buy, and reasons to pause
- Pros: a narrow footprint, three useful coffee presets, adjustable drink quantities and a wand for learning milk texturing.
- Tradeoffs: no built-in grinder, hands-on milk preparation, used grounds to clear and parts to wash after making drinks.
- Best fit: someone who enjoys making one or two drinks and wants both hot coffee and quick cold extraction.
- Consider another approach: a household wanting push-button lattes should look for a fully automatic model that handles both grinding and milk.
Is it worth moving up from the EC685?
The older Dedica Style EC685.M [5] already offers a similarly narrow body, espresso and manual milk frothing. Its official Malaysian listing was RM999 when checked. The Duo’s purchase case rests on its dedicated cold-brew preset, touch icons and My LatteArt wand rather than a promise that every espresso will taste better.
If your EC685 works well and you mostly drink hot coffee, replacing it is hard to justify from the feature list alone. For a first machine, compare the complete setup cost and how often you will actually use cold extraction.
Ownership costs beyond the machine
There is no grinder inside: use suitable pre-ground coffee or budget separately for an espresso-capable grinder. Include its counter space as well as its price. Coffee, milk and ice are ongoing costs. As a budgeting example, RM40 for 250 g works out to RM2.40 for 15 g of coffee, before milk and wastage; this is an illustration, not a required dose or a quoted bean offer.
De’Longhi’s 500 ml Decalk Care [6] was listed at RM89 for five uses, or RM17.80 per dose before delivery. Frequency depends on use and water hardness. Follow the manual’s cleaning routine, including wiping and purging the wand, rather than leaving milk residue until tomorrow.
Check the Malaysian offer before paying
Checked 1 October 2026: the Green product page showed availability and RM1,599 in the live order panel, while other official listings still displayed RM1,349. Treat RM1,599 as a reference and confirm the final cart price, stock and delivery postcode. The official store’s published delivery list omits Sabah and Sarawak; buyers there should confirm an authorised seller’s delivery and Malaysian warranty before relying on this offer. The Metal version showed out of stock during the check.
The local page states a two-year included warranty. Buy a Malaysian-warranty unit, keep the invoice and check the seller’s coverage. Read the sale and return terms [7]: official change-of-mind returns require unused goods and carry a 5% processing fee plus RM33 return shipping.
If the manual workflow appeals to you, compare the current EC890.GR offer and included accessories before choosing a seller.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use whole beans directly?
No. Grind them separately, or buy coffee ground for espresso, then fill and tamp the filter.
Does it make a latte automatically?
No. Brew the espresso, steam the milk with the wand and combine them yourself.
Are the removable parts dishwasher-safe?
The EC890 manual says none of its components or accessories are dishwasher-safe. Plan to hand-wash them.
