IKEA KALLAX 147×147 cm is the large white four-by-four shelving unit, not the smaller two-by-four version or a fitted-door bundle. The copyable Shopee product name is IKEA KALLAX shelving unit 147×147 cm. IKEA Malaysia listed it at RM479 on 29 September 2026 (article number 603.518.82). The square footprint can turn a blank wall into sixteen open cubbies, but its height and wall-fixing requirement make it a deliberate furniture purchase, not a casual box organiser. We assess the official dimensions and care guidance; this is not a hands-on test.
Before buying on Shopee, check the exact model or variant, seller, delivered total and applicable warranty.

What the RM479 buys
The unit measures 147 cm wide, 39 cm deep and 146.5 cm high. IKEA rates each shelf at a maximum 13 kg; treat that as a per-cubby limit, not permission to load one side heavily or climb on it. The body uses particleboard, fibreboard, paper foil, a paper honeycomb filling and plastic edging rather than solid timber. That construction helps keep a large unit manageable in price and weight, but it is not a hardwood heirloom and damaged edges are not easy to refinish invisibly. IKEA lists two flat-pack parcels, so plan the route through your staircase, lift and doorway before delivery.
Sixteen open cells are the main advantage: books, folders, toys, folded clothes and labelled baskets can be sorted without custom carpentry. The regular cube proportions also accept compatible IKEA inserts, though inserts and boxes are extra; do not mistake the plain shelf’s RM479 price for a cabinet bundle. A broad 147 cm face gives a tidy visual grid and room to change what each cube does as a household changes.
Where it falls short
First, it consumes a real patch of floor and wall. Measure skirting boards, plug locations, door swings and the full path for both packages; a 147 cm square can overwhelm a narrow flat or a small bedroom. Second, every cubby is open unless you pay for separate inserts, so visual clutter remains visible. Third, the 13 kg maximum per shelf limits dense book collections and heavy equipment. Load evenly, put heavier items low, and do not use the product as a step or seat.
Most importantly, IKEA says the included wall attachment must be used to secure the furniture. Although its product copy also presents KALLAX as a room-divider option, do not assume this tall unit is a free-standing, frequently moved divider: plan a suitable fixing point and follow the assembly instructions. Renters who cannot drill, households with small children, or anyone needing mobile storage should choose a shorter or freestanding alternative designed for that situation.
Pros
- Sixteen equal cubes provide useful, reconfigurable storage and display.
- Clear 147 x 39 x 146.5 cm dimensions and 13 kg per-shelf guidance make planning straightforward.
- RM479 is a defined current Malaysia price for the bare white unit, with compatible inserts available separately.
- Wipe-clean surfaces suit ordinary household dust and light marks.
Cons and caveats
- Large footprint and two bulky packages complicate tight rooms, stairs and East Malaysia delivery.
- Open cubbies show clutter; doors, drawers and baskets add cost and need exact compatibility checks.
- Particleboard/fibreboard and paper-foil surfaces are less forgiving of swelling, impact and deep scratches than solid wood.
- Wall attachment is a safety requirement, not an optional upgrade; each shelf is limited to 13 kg.
Malaysia price, delivery and warranty
The checked IKEA Malaysia listing was RM479 for the white 147×147 cm shelf by itself. Promotions, postcode delivery, assembly service and insert bundles can change the final spend; compare the same colour, size and included pieces at checkout. IKEA’s item page does not state a KALLAX-specific extended guarantee, so do not assume one from guarantees offered on unrelated IKEA products. Keep the receipt and confirm the current IKEA Malaysia return, defect and statutory consumer-rights terms before purchase. IKEA Malaysia publishes a 365-day return policy with conditions; that is not the same thing as a model-specific warranty. For Kuching and other East Malaysian postcodes, verify delivery eligibility, fee, lead time and who handles damage claims before paying a marketplace seller.
Who should buy it?
Buy IKEA KALLAX 147×147 cm if you have a broad wall, want sixteen compartments rather than a wardrobe of hidden storage, can fix it safely to the wall and are comfortable furnishing it with baskets or inserts over time. It is particularly practical for a family study, shared living area or hobby room where categories need to stay visible and reachable.
Skip it if your floor area is tight, you need closed dust protection out of the box, you cannot secure furniture to a wall, or you expect to store heavy archives in every cube. A low cabinet or smaller KALLAX configuration will be easier to fit and safer to load. Do not choose the white finish based only on a marketplace photo: confirm that the listing is the 147×147 cm white unit, not a smaller shelf, insert set or black-brown variant.
Final verdict
IKEA KALLAX 147×147 cm is a useful, expandable storage grid at a clearly checkable RM479, but the value depends on having enough room and treating anchoring and load limits seriously. The best reason to pay for this exact size is the sixteen-cube layout; the weakest reason is buying it before measuring or assuming boxes and doors are included. For the right wall and a safe installation, it is a sensible long-term organiser. Without those conditions, choose a smaller or closed cabinet instead.
